Like we said, camp is a big decision. So, of course,
you have questions. Here are the ones we hear the most. We suggest you
read them all; you will find that the answers make you feel comfortable.
Where do most Blue Ridge – Equinunk
campers come from?
Last year we welcomed campers from 15 states and three foreign countries.
Of course, certain areas are represented more heavily since friends tell
friends and relatives do the same. Our largest group comes from New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut, Baltimore/Washington, Pennsylvania and South
Florida.
How will I get to camp?
Our well-organized transportation program uses air conditioned coach buses
with lavatories. Buses depart from a variety of greater New York City
locations and from a carefully chosen Philadelphia point. All buses are
supervised by senior camp staff members. We arrange chaperoned flights
from south Florida.
What is the first day like?
It’s a blast! The fun starts as soon as you get off the bus, where
your counselors will be waiting to take you right to your cabin. We’ll
already have assigned you your own bed and we even unpack your things
for you before you get here. You’ll meet your bunkmates, head out
for a grand tour of camp, then back for an early dinner and an all-camp
evening activity. What a way to begin!
How often do I shower?
Every day, and singing is definitely allowed!
Do I have to make my bed?
Yes. But everyone else is making theirs, too, so you’ll feel good
about it and the counselors will help you too.
Do I clean the bunk?
Every camper has some special assigned "job" so that together
we keep things neat. We also have maintenance staff who follow up in the
bathrooms and make sure that everything is sanitary.
Do I wear camp clothes every day?
Yes, campers and staff all wear camp uniforms. Camp shirts are fun, colorful,
and a great way to keep up the spirit and tradition! When we leave camp
for the movies or for a special evening program, you can wear "optional"
clothes.
Do I have to do my own laundry?
No, we do that for you, every week, at our own on-site camp laundry.
What do I bring to camp?
Everything on our clothing list, plus a favorite blanket or stuffed animal
– if you wish – and a great big smile.
Should I bring any money?
You won’t need it, except for $ 10-20 in an envelope which you can
use for souvenirs on camp trips. Otherwise, everything is covered and
we do not allow campers to carry excessive amounts of cash with them.
Can I get care packages at camp?
Only if you celebrate your birthday while you’re here. Equinunk
and Blue Ridge campers have already been given the best gift of all: camp!
If you need anything like shampoo or toothpaste, we’ll get that
for you.
Can I get email from my parents?
Yes you can, but we also hope they will send you some good old mail with
stamps on it, too. Tell them to write often and remind them that sometimes
mail is slow up in our neighborhood – so they should plan in advance,
especially for mail that might be waiting here when you arrive!
What happens if I miss home?
What happens is that we reassure you it’s a totally normal feeling.
Then we give you an environment full of support and good feelings –
so you feel like expressing your own feelings. You know that word "home
_ _ _ _"? Well, we don’t even say that word at our camp –
because (Guess what!) it’s not a sickness at all. We call it something
different: separation situation. And we know that everyone separates successfully
on a different schedule. So we’re here with lots of advice and lots
of love – and we’ll even help your parents through their own
separation situation!
What if I have other problems?
There are lots of people here to help you, just in case – your counselor,
group leader, Sheryl, Richie, Lori, Kevin. But remember, you have to tell
us. If you don’t, we won’t know you need our help. We want
camp to be a happy and memorable experience for you, so we want you to
know there is always someone to talk to.
Will I ever get to choose my own activities?
You will have "Hobby Center" during the day and "Free Play"
almost every evening after dinner. These are the times to head for your
favorites!
Is there anything special on Friday nights?
A large percentage of our campers come from Jewish homes, but we welcome
children from all backgrounds, religions and faiths. We share Shabbat
dinner and services, which are more a tradition than a true religious
ritual. Friday evening programs conclude with stories written by Richie.
The stories are warm and humorous, with kind messages.
Is camp very structured?
Well, that depends upon what you mean. Here’s the inside story:
We want you to feel good about what you have accomplished, so we want
to help you do many different things. That means a set schedule every
day, and we make sure that you follow through. We also permit flexibility
and choice as campers get older, but always with that idea that you follow
through on the chosen program. You’ll understand – and you’ll
love it.
Is camp competitive?
There’s that popular word and, once again, it depends on what you
mean. We do compete, with fabulous in-camp leagues and out-of-camp teams
for Wayne County tournaments in many programs. We don’t have tryouts,
we have work-outs, and everyone gets to participate. We also understand
that not all campers are sports fanatics, so we learn all about individual
campers and we capitalize on individual skills and interests. |
