Simon’s Fund – Checking Hearts, Saving Lives

Simon’s Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness about the conditions that lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death in young athletes and children.

Simon’s Fund raises awareness about the conditions that lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death in children through prevention, education and innovation. Under the leadership of Phyllis and Darren Sudman, Simon’s Fund helped make Pennsylvania the first state to pass a law that prevents sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes. Since, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act has been passed in five other states too.

This year, the organization is launching a first-of-its-kind national youth cardiac registry of seemingly healthy kids.  HeartBytes will promote research and help standardize the heart screening process.  “Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare,” Phyllis states.  “I don’t want another mother to lose her child to a detectable and treatable heart condition.”

Alexander Neuhaus #54 Memorial Scholarship Fund

Camps Equinunk and Blue Ridge is proud to support The Alexander Neuhaus #54 Memorial Scholarship Fund at #WELIVEFORTHIS, A Night of Giving Back on March 12th in New York City. Support The Cause at CECBR.org

Alexander Neuhaus (Son of Equinunk 2012 and 2013) – “Zander” — was a gifted student, multi-sport athlete, son, brother, and friend. Although Zander’s life was way too short, it was full. He was an amazing, compassionate, loving kid with an infectious smile who touched everyone he encountered. We want to carry forward the lessons and ideals we learned from Zander through The Zander Neuhaus Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit student athletes.

Through team sports, Zander learned the importance of intense effort, sportsmanship, and teamwork. His participation in sports, helped him to mature, to develop tolerance and empathy, and, most importantly, gave him joy.

In team sports, individuals learn to accept, appreciate and trust their teammates without regard to differences in their cultures, color, nationality, or economic backgrounds. These are the qualities that forge a group of individuals into a team. These qualities, broadly applied, make a life well lived. These are the qualities that Zander was developing through his participation in team sports.

It is the mission of the Zander Fund to create opportunities that would otherwise not be available to deserving, young athletes to learn the lessons and experience the joy of team sports – just like Zander.

Camps Equinunk & Blue Ridge Launches #WELIVEFORTHIS, A Night of Giving Back

New York, New York — February 16th, 2015 — Camps Equinunk and Blue Ridge, a children’s summer camp located in Northeast Pennsylvania will be hosting #WELIVEFORTHIS, A Night of Giving Back in New York City on March 12th, 2015. The event will support three youth-centered charitable organizations; Zander Neuhaus Memorial FundSummer Camp Opportunities Promote Education, and Simon’s Fund.

“As a community that cares for and enriches the lives of children since 1920, comprised of generations of campers, staff, and alumni, we believe it’s our responsibility to help others” said Camp Director Adam Baker. “Not only do we see this event as a terrific opportunity to give back but also to introduce the children in our community to the act of giving.”

Shortly after releasing information about the event, Blue Ridge Camper, Erica Sosman (15) emailed Owner and Director Sheryl Kamen with an elaborate plan for a spin-off event (literally) aptly named CECBR Spins. The event will be held at The Roslyn JCC on March 29th and is completely camper run and spun in coordination with the year-round team at Equinunk and Blue Ridge.

“When I heard about camps Night of Giving Back, I immediately thought, I would like to be a part of this” said Sosman. Knowing my camp family would also love the opportunity to get involved, I thought why not run an event that would give us campers a chance to give back? CECBRSpins is going to be a fun energetic and amazing way for us to get involved in raising money for the Zander Neuhaus Memorial Fund, SCOPE, and Simon’s Fund.”

The Night of Giving Back event will be held at The Chester located in the Meatpacking District and will feature a Silent Auction featuring items autographed by Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Dave Matthews Band, Katy Perry and more along with tickets to see professional New York Sports Teams and more. All proceeds will be going to charity. Tickets are available online by visiting the event website — CECBR.org.

Charity Information:

Zander Neuhaus Memorial Fund:

Alexander Neuhaus (Equinunk Camper 2012 and 2013), “Zander,” was a gifted student, multi-sport athlete and friend to everyone he encountered. Zander lived his life in an exemplary manner; giving of his time, friendship, compassion, support, concern and love to everyone he came across. He was an amazing young man with an infectious smile who touched so many people. We want to carry forward the lessons we have learned from Zander and the ideals he conveyed in a memorial scholarship fund to benefit student athletes of low economic resources. Sports, wherein Zander learned the importance of effort, sportsmanship, and teamwork helped him to mature and grow, be tolerant and patient, recognize that while people are different they must be accepted and embraced, and learned life lessons. Sharing, teaching, and inspiring these qualities to children through sports regardless of economic status is the mission of the Zander Memorial Scholarship Fund.

SCOPE, Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education:

SCOPE’s mission is to provide children in need the edge to succeed in life through the summer camp experience. We accomplish this by funding summer camp scholarships at nonprofit, resident camps where children will benefit from a positive, safe and healthy environment led by excellent adult role models, who will help them develop their full potential.

Simon’s Fund:

Simon’s Fund is an organization dedicated to raising awareness about the conditions that lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death in youth athletes and children. Simon’s Fund Educates, Advocates, Screens, innovates, Collaborates, Funds and Empowers.
